Spring Cruise!
What do you guys think about doing a cruise this spring? I think it would be cool, say the 2nd Sat or Sun. in April to cruise to Williamsburg on Route 5 and then snap some shots in Old Town Williamsburg and eat lunch downtown somewhere. Any other suggestions?
Let's do it!
Let's do it!

Re: Spring Cruise!
Let's do something the second Saturday in April...up to Skyline Dr or to Williamsburg on Route 5. Who's up for it?
Re: Spring Cruise!
We'd be on board for the Williamsburg run. Rt 5 would be great ride. The old bus struggles at highway speeds.

Re: Spring Cruise!
Cool!!! 2nd Sat. in April it is...I'll plan a route we can take and if anyone knows a cool place where we can all park and have lunch let me know!
Re: Spring Cruise!
How does this sound?
We meet at the Wendy's at the corner of I-295 and Rt. 10 in the AM and from there proceed East on Route 10 through Hopewell. Make a left onto Route 156 crossing over the James River (is it the James?) until we arrive at Route 5. Turn right (east) on Route 5 until we come to Greensprings Rd (Route 614) and turn left there. Of course, while we are on Route 5 we can stop at any of the plantations to sight see and takes some pictures of our rides.
Once we are on Route 614 take that until it dead-ends at Jamestown Rd (Rt 31) and turn right towards the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry. Then take the ferry across the James. Once in Surry we can grab lunch at the Surry House Restaurant & Country Inn. Afterwards continue on Route 31 until it meets up with Route 10 and head west back towards Hopewell.
Here is a website for the restaurant in Surry:

...and for the ferry in Jamestown:

I think this would be an awesome cruise! What do you guys think?

I sent an email to VDOT asking them about this...I'll let you know when I hear back from them. On Google maps it appears the ramp from the road to the ferry is flat.
BTW...the Surry restaurant would like an approximate head count...so if you are planning on going and haven't posted here then post up or send me an email to brimako@verizon.net. Only 30 more days!!!

Subject: Lowered Vehicles
Hi,
Do vehicles that have been "lowered" have any trouble driving on the ramp onto the ferry? I'm just curious how steep the angle of the ramp is and if my vehicle will have any trouble. If the ramp from the road to the ferry is level then I suppose I won't have any problem. Any information you can provide would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Brian
RESPONSE:
Good morning,
Thank you for writing us about this issue. It is quite possible you could have a problem trying to use the ferry depending on how high the tide is when you arrive. There can be a dip or hump in the ramp depending on the tide. If you are concerned, I would suggest using the I-64 route to the Route 17 James River Bridge instead of using the ferry. Below are the height and weight restrictions for the ferry.
Restrictions
* Height: 12 feet 6 inches
* Width: Legal limits for highway travel
* Length: Legal limits for highway travel
* Weight: 16 tons for large trucks, 28 tons for semi-tractor combinations
Please see our website for more information: http://www.virginiadot.org/travel/ferry-jamestown.asp
Sincerely,
Lauren

Re: Spring Cruise!
Since we are leaving Chester around 10:30am we should get to the ferry sometime around noon. That time of day the tide should be between low and high so I think you guys with lowered rides will be OK. However, I don't want you guys scraping so just use your best judgment.
Re: Spring Cruise!
Less than a week away until the Spring Cruise! Get your rides ready! Forecast for Sat. (according to NBC 12 Weather) is a high of 62 and sunny! Cool...so no worries for overheating :) Forecast for Jamestown is 69 and sunny!
PM me with any questions or if you need directions to the meeting place (Wendy's at the junction of I-295 and Rt. 10 in Chester, VA). I'll provide a cruise map to everyone who shows up. We'll also have a few rendezvous points along the route so we can stay together:
1. Sherwood Forest Plantation will be the first stop
2. Jamestown-Scotland Ferry station will the be the second stop
3. Surry Restaurant will be our stopping place for lunch.
After lunch we'll cruise back to our starting point. There are a couple options here: We can take the ferry back over to Jamestown and cruise back the way we came; OR we can continue to Rt. 10 and cruise back to the starting point without going back over the river. I've heard from a few folks that the ferry trip north (back to Jamestown) is very nice with some awesome views of a few colonial ships! Any thoughts, ideas?

Re: Spring Cruise!
Forecast for the cruise: 65 and sunny!!! Perfect weather for a nice drive to Jamestown via Rt 5 and then to Surry on the Jamestown/Scotland Ferry!
I want to make sure everyone knows the meeting place and time:
Meet: 10am, Sat. April 10th at the Wendy's parking lot (I -295 and Rt. 10 junction in Chester). The address is 13201 Kingston Ave in Chester...just west of I-295. Map here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-8&client=fi...9&z=16
We depart at 10:30am. If you need help getting there or are running a little late just give me a call at (804) 822-6746...we can wait a little longer. I will have maps for everyone.
Cruise route and more info are on the Samba.com thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=399301&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
Depending on what the traffic situation is on the ferry we may take it back to Jamestown after lunch in Surry. We'll play it by ear...if it's too busy and the wait is too long then we'll head towards Rt. 10 and cruise back to our meeting point via Rt 10.
See you all Saturday!!! As a courtesy, PM me if you plan on going (and how many in your party) so I can give the restaurant in Surry an approximate headcount. Even if you already said you were going...just let me know how many are coming with you.
