Transaxle Travels

Just got my 6 volt trans. back from Rancho in Fullerton, CA. rebuilt and assembled with axles on a freight pallet . Sent it out Jan. 15 in two boxes and got it back Tuesday the 16th not a bad turnaround time at all . Shipping costs about $150 each way and the rebuild was $499, it looks like new with one piece original type axle boots, case bead blasted, and axles/wheel back plates painted black . Just got to get the luggage tray area scraped clean and POR-15 brushed in before trans. and engine re-installed . Should be able to out distance Brian in my 63 this year, no sweat !
Should not be too much longer til I figure out how to post pics of return to the road .

Whoa...thems fightin' words Tom! I've got another 2500 mile trip planned for July: Richmond, VA to LA!! This time it won't be a round trip though...

Well my car originated out west around the San Fran area but I am not quite ready to make a trek back to the promised land, yet .
We had a VW cruiser meeting last night and it was voiced repeatedly that you guys supported our Flying Circus show and fall skyline cruise so we will endeavor to support and participate in your show and cruise events .
Tell me again about your fuel tank fume/leak problems with the 65 bug . I just got a 66-67 fuel send unit from the Samba which is different/improved from the 63-65 units . The 63-65 units have a rubber boot in which the arm where the fuel guage cable attatches and pivots typically crack allowing fuel to flow out the top of tank when close to full . The 66-67 units have a brass bushing at the pivot as well as a metal float and dampner piston which I guess gives a steadier reading with the mechanical guage . The white plastic Empi sender gave out on me and started seeping after 6 months . I am no where close to a mechanic but am passing along my observations as I experience them . Tom

Tom...you explained the problem I have with my fuel sender to the tee. The little rubber boot is slightly cracked so when the tank is full a small amount of fuel leaks around the rim allowing fuel vapors to enter the cabin through the vents. To remedy this problem I simply fill my tank to 8.5 gallons each time I fill up! If your new sender works out maybe I can try that one in my '65. You coming tomorrow?

BTW...glad the VW cruisers are taking an interest into what we do down here. Our show will be in June this year as opposed to August. After looking at the VW calendar on thesamba we figured June was good. The show is on the 19th of June which is a couple weeks after the Bealeton show at the Flying Circus.
