distributor/timing question
I'm re-installing the distributor in my '80 vanagon (2.0 liter air cooled) and have a question about what it means to have the timing set at 7.5deg before tdc.
My question is this: i have already found tdc on cylinder 1; which of these two options do I do:
1. Do I leave the pulley at 0 (tdc) and then with a timing light rotate the distributor cap until I reach 7.5 tdc?
2. Or do I set the pulley at 7.5 tdc, and then start the car up and adjust with the timing light until it is at 7.5 tdc once the engine is warmed up?
I did option #2, but it seems to not be running quite right. I think I hear some knocking and pinging going on while out driving on my test drive.
Any ideas/help is appreciated,
Rory
