67 Westy Spice Rack
I figured I'd post up the 67 westfalia spice rack I'm restoring. Its a small project but hope you enjoy. Top photo is the target, bellow is the one I'm working on
Bellow to the left is the 67 westy rack I picked up off thesamba.com its 70% all there, just the top half is missing a lot of the pieces. to the right is a Baywindow Westy rack w identical veneer that I'm gonna use for the parts on the 67 rack. split window westy racks go for about $300 repro or even more for an original. I'm tryig to use all original wood. the bay window rack has a lot of pieces that are the same dimensions as of the top of the split rack. the idea is to combine the two to make one split westy rack.

Tommarrow I am gonna start glueing all the wood peices that are spliting, warping and falling apart. Some of the veneer is pulling away from the OG wood. I'm just gonna give Elmers wood glue a shot. I'm open to any other suggestions.

That's pretty neat. Didn't know there was a spice rack option in these things.

Re: 67 Westy Spice Rack
these spice racks are pretty useful, u can store a bunch of can goods and food for when u go camping (or get hungry at a car show). so with last weekends beautiful weather, I started by fixing some of the wood that split and was flakeing and falling apart. the top photo you can see were one shelf split down the center and I installed a wood brace to strengthen it up.
after bracing the unit, I used elmers wood glue to rejoin the flakeing pieces and veneer that was falling off. a lot of the wood was in bad shape and rotted. the C clamps were very helpfull with this. I used all original vw screws and nails that I had laying around, and only the wood brace and hinge were not from a vw.
the original screws and nails were just rotted completely away and required slightly longer screws and nails to resecure the pieces.

Re: 67 Westy Spice Rack
Finally got back to finishing the spice, rack, here I am using the pieces from the bay rack for the top half of the splitty rack.
here I am about to remove one of the side pieces, that I'm gonna use for the door of the splity rack
after removing the side of the bay spice rack i'm preparing to cut the piece for the top lid.
Cutting the top lid to size. westy wood is not veneer, its formica, so it chips verrrrry easy. the table saw was pretty tricky to use w this formica.
hardest part, cutting the groove in the center of the wood for the westy molding. we used a table saw with extremely thin blade.
after cutting the hinge from home repo its finished
